Hello!
Thank you for being here.
There has been a lovely upswing in followers which makes my heart burst and then I realised- while I talk about Unhidden constantly it feels, I haven't talked about me and my story here in quite some time.
So- I am Victoria Jenkins, founder of Unhidden!
I have a number of gastrointestinal and pain related conditions that have ended in mobility issues which is part of why I founded Unhidden- the other reason was actually whilst talking about clothing with a fellow patient in hospital way back in 2016; she couldn't access her own body or dress for her office based job.
I was certain someone would be doing this, it seemed so obvious- and the more I looked the more I realised I myself would have benefitted from adaptive clothing and that actually no- few were tackling this area of design.
I have worked in the fashion industry for 14 years now, as a garment technologist, technical illustrator and start up consultant.
My whole career has been about how garments are made and how they fit so when I had the idea for Unhidden it just didn't let me sleep; I quit my permanent role at my dream company and went freelance! It's been quite the road to launch, we've only been trading 8 months- but we have done a lot in that time.
Having seen firsthand the negative impact of the fashion industry on it's own workers, and then the knock on effect on the planet- I could not compromise my ideals to bring a range out as fast as I could with no regard to this very serious issue- which is why we use deadstock cloth and pay our garment workers properly- no sweatshops here.
As a result I am also a speaker on ableism and disability awareness and do my best to advocate too- you can see more on that at @victoria_is_unhidden.
So that's the basics in brief- I hope to share more about myself and how we have arrived at the place we are now over the coming days.
Victoria x
