Nicknamed the Fireworks Galaxy, I thought NGC6946 would be an appropriate post for July 4th weekend. This pretty little galaxy lies between the constellations of Cygnus and Cepheus, about 25 million light years from Earth. The reason you see so many stars around the galaxy is that it lies very close to the galactic plane, on the other side of the Milky Way.
