🦈Their patterns are unique as a human fingerprint.
🐋Their HUGE mouth expands up to 1.5m wide.
🦈They're one-of-three filter-feeding sharks.
Sadly, Whale Sharks are classed as Endangered by the IUCN mainly due to fisheries, bycatch losses, and vessel strikes.

How can you get involved with shark research this summer?
Become a citizen scientist by hunting for eggcases! 👀
👉Remember: Every time you spot an Eggcase on the beach or in the ocean, remember to do the following steps:
📸 Take a picture
📍 Document the location
👀Use the eggcase ID guide to discover the species
💻 Upload it to our website
Doing this helps us to discover more about egg-laying species in our waters. So far we've recorded over 300,000+ individual Eggcases - now that's A LOT of Eggcases! That’s all down to the amazing work that you all continue to do. So thank you for your ongoing support!

How do sharks reproduce?
Sharks invest a lot of energy into producing a few, well-developed young. This is so that they have a good chance of survival. There are three main methods in which sharks reproduce, which are:
🦈 OVIPARITY (egg-laying) - This is when the mother produces eggs encased in a tough 'leathery' eggcase - which you may find washed up on a beach! A female may spend a long time laying her eggs, ensuring they’re securely fixed in a safe place
🦈 OVOVIVIPARITY - Instead of laying her eggs, the female will carry them inside her body. The embryos develop within an eggcase. Once developed the baby shark will hatch inside her mother, who'll then give birth to the young.
🦈 VIVPARITY (live birth) - The baby shark develops inside its mother’s body, receiving nutrients and oxygen through an umbilical cord. This is the same method used by mammals.
