Today is Shark Awareness Day!!
Posted @withregram • @maldiveswhalesharkresearch Happy #SharkAwarenessDay !
.
Today we celebrate sharks in all their variety and splendour 🙌🏾 In the Maldives we are lucky enough to be home to more than 30 species of shark, 29 of which are globally endangered. It is imperative that we protect these keystone predators, and their habitat, from negative human impact such as targeted fisheries, bycatch, disturbance and unsustainable coastal development where sharks aggregate. Here are some of the ways in which sharks are valuable to our oceans 🌊
.
🦈 Sharks keep ocean ecosystems in balance; they are at the top of the food chain and by keeping prey populations in check they help regulate species abundance, distribution and diversity, which in turn impacts the health of marine habitats.
.
🦈 Large predators like sharks are effective carbon sinks, and therefore help in the fight against climate change.
.
🦈 Sharks boost the economy; sharks act as a natural attraction for eco-based recreation and tourism. A Maldives based study found that increasing shark populations can raise dive tourists' trip demand to the Maldives by 15%.

Wait ... was it Gorillas in the Mist ... or Gorillas on a Farm?
Mountain gorillas live (mostly) in the forest, in a protected national park. But every once in a while, they venture out into the nearby farmland.
The Fossey Fund works carefully to minimize unintended human-wildlife interactions, and the government of Rwanda is hard at work with plans to expand the park. (This video was taken during Ellen & Portia’s recent trip, BTW!)

Posted @withregram • @savinggorillas Earlier this month, we set up a new camera trap on our Ellen Campus to study the biodiversity that is returning to the area that was previously used as agricultural land. Excitingly… we already have had some visitors! Last week our cameras caught a side-striped jackal and common genet. This is a great suggestion that biodiversity, both small and large, is returning to the area! #conservation#biodiversity

@environmentabudhabi has translocated 20 scimitar-horned oryx, 25 addax antelope and five dama gazelles to their natural habitat in Chad as part of the world’s largest mammal reintroduction programme.
EAD’s initiative has bred the globally threatened species #inAbuDhabi specifically for translocation to Chad, and has so far reintroduced 460 oryx and 96 addax to the wild.
