night navigation can be tricky for a lot of people, I know it's something that is for me still. My main reason for night being difficult is because it's hard for me to see at night even with night vision on. When terrain associating, feeling the ground under your feet can helpful, noticing a lot of thick vegetation which usually indicates a draw or remembering what kind of terrain you should be walking in to your next checkpoint: if my next point is 500m away I can remember that I have a draw and a saddle to walk over on my azimuth.
You can also look at the tree line. You can look ahead and see the the different tree lines ahead of you and that will also indicate the terrain is changing and hopefully that change matches the terrain on your route.
