Thank you @bdcruz for the edit @npr ———————— Self-portrait, BK 2022 My mother and auntie, LA 2019 Mei-Ling is a combination of my mother's name, 玲玲 / Ling Ling, and my auntie's name, 美美 / Mei Mei. My grandfather named my mother after a famous actress at the time, and the name Ling means the sound of jade or the tinkling of jade. My auntie's name, Mei, means beautiful. According to the 2010 Taiwanese census, Mei-Ling was the third most popular name for women.

I’ve met so many beautiful people at Riis over the years. Made so many friends. Everyone holds a special place in my heart. Eddie, “THE MAYOR OF RIIS”, I met in 2014, my second year of documenting the beach. We became instant friends. Spending entire summers together, hanging out at the beach until the sunset. Escaping the stresses of life and healing our souls with the sea and the sun. I will miss you friend. So much. We’ll always have the beach. 💔🕊
