37 years ago today, SSD set out for an epic cross-country trip to play some shows in California. From Al: “I had a good job, and I bought a van, but unfortunately I did not buy it with air conditioning. So when we decided to go to California that was a big concern. How were we going to go with ten guys in a van with no air conditioning? So before the trip, I had to find some after-market place that would install an AC. It’s not something I normally would have done. I didn’t think it would even work that well, but I didn’t see how those guys would make it back there with no circulation and no windows. I paid some guy $800 to do the job, and it worked just enough to make it worth the hassle. Probably never made it below 70 degrees, though.
Our goal was to make it to California as quick as possible, with no shows along the way. I think the first night we made it to Des Moines, IA, and I made sure we had enough money that we could stay in a hotel. The number one decision on where we would stay was always the security of the equipment. So wherever we stayed, whether it be a hotel or friend’s house, we absolutely had to make sure the equipment was safe. I wasn’t going to be one of the guys who came out and was like “Oh, the equipment is stolen!” That wasn’t happening. So someone always stayed in the van. The van was not going to stay alone, and it was going to be parked in a location where people weren’t going to be able to be able to get the doors open.”
