The “violent incident model” sees partner abuse as episodes of violence and measures it with the degree of physical injuries. It fails to account for the entire continuum of psychological abuse that takes place in a setting of coercive control: a set of tactics abusers use to dominate and perpetuate psychological violence. This is the most common form of of intimate partner violence and it severely impacts the mental and physical well being of survivors. In the wake of the Depp-Heard defamation trial, we must continue to remember the ways in which our culture institutions fail survivors.
