From 1918 until 1934, Georgia O’Keeffe lived for part of each year at the family estate of Alfred Stieglitz on Lake George in New York’s Adirondack Park. The 36-acre property, situated along the western shoreline of the area, served as a rural retreat for the artist, and provided a wide variety of subject matter that inspired some of her most iconic works. During this highly productive period, O’Keeffe’s experimented and evolved in her modern approach to depicting the natural world. The artist created more than 200 paintings on canvas and paper in addition to sketches and pastels, making her Lake George years among the most prolific and transformative of her 70 year career. 'Petunias' (1925) is radiant example of this era in O’Keeffe’s practice. With its subtle gradations of purple and blue within the blossoms, and the intensity of color balanced by the velvety surface, it reveals her deep connection to nature, which is often cited as fundamental to her artistic legacy.
