#YouAskedUs: What is the risk of putting repositories near bodies of water? 🤔
The two potential sites for the deep geological repository are both further away from bodies of water like the Great Lakes than many current storage locations. Learn more at the link in our bio.

While Canada’s used nuclear fuel is currently safely contained and isolated in interim storage, the current approach isn’t a permanent solution. A deep geological repository will safely contain and isolate used nuclear fuel for the long-term. Learn more at the link in bio.

#DidYouKnow? One way we ensure our work is based on the best science is by working with leading scientists and experts from universities. A particular aspect of this work is peer review, where we request independent external experts to review our work. Learn more at the link in our bio.
#FuelFacts: Nuclear energy is the largest source of electricity in Ontario, accounting for approximately 60% of Ontario's energy. Canada has a plan to safely manage the used fuel for the long-term. Learn more at the link in bio.

There are several areas where natural radioactivity has been contained for millions of years. These areas provide strong support for the containment of used nuclear fuel in a deep geological repository under similar conditions.
For example, the Cigar Lake Uranium deposit in Saskatchewan is one billion years old. It was buried 450 metres below the surface, protected by a layer of naturally occurring clay, with no trace of radioactive components at the surface.
