As we talk more about innovations in nuclear, it is important to understand how the fund your idea. Starting a company can be expensive and in the case of nuclear reactor designs, you might need a significant amount of money. Raising money from investors is one of the most common ways to fund growth and it’s important to understand how the process works to make the best decisions for your business.
If you’re in the very early stages of your startup and need some initial capital to build your MVP, a pre-seed round can provide that. You might have an MVP or even just a mockup in Figma that shows how your product will work. But you likely won’t have a team built out or a fully developed product just yet.
Here’s a look at some of the things you should have when you’re seeking pre-seed funding:
Define the problem you’re trying to solve
A new or novel solution for that problem
A basic understanding of your market
Fundraising plan (how will you fund the business over time?)
An MVP (even if it’s a product mockup in Figma)
A plan for how you’re going to start getting early users or customers.
Seed funding would require:
A fully functional product (you’ve gone beyond mockups and Figma files)
Some level of product-market fit
People who use and like your product
More developed market research
Minimally viable team (these should be your first hires)
In some cases, revenue is expected (not always)
In both cases, primary sources of investments are founders themselves, friends, and family.
However, if you’re looking to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars at the seed stage (or even millions), you can look to angel investors and venture capitalists (VCs).
Also, keep in mind that you don’t need a laundry list of investors. If you can find 1-2 VCs or angels for the round, you don’t need to crowd your investor pool.

New horizons of nuclear power use: Zeno Power, a developer of advanced Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS), has raised a $20 million Series A funding round.
RPS work by converting the heat generated from the decay of specific radioisotopes directly into electricity, producing persistent, clean power for decades at a time. NASA has used RPSs to power more than 25 of its most storied missions over the last 60 years, including onboard the Perseverance rover that landed on Mars earlier this year. Zeno’s innovation is in its patented fuel and shielding design and a manufacturing process that the company has demonstrated through the development of several prototypes.

Have you heard about VTR? The Versatile Test Reactor, will be a state-of-the-art science and technology lab for advanced nuclear energy in the U.S. and will feature a sodium-cooled fast reactor that uses high energy neutrons to test and develop advanced reactor fuels and materials.
.
Fast reactors use fast-moving neutrons to operate at higher temperatures and lower pressures. They can be cooled by molten salt, liquid metal, or helium gas. This leads to inherent safety features, higher operating efficiencies and less waste.
.
Research conducted with VTR will be pivotal in creating new fuels, materials, instrumentation and sensors as well as developing methods to drastically extend lifetime reactor cores, boost fuel performance and even accelerate fusion research.
