STORY: 30 second exposure of the Milky Way taken while zooming from 16mm to 35mm 🌌
I saw this technique used by a photographer a couple of years ago. While capturing the photo, you slowly rotate the zoom ring so the stars drag a trail through the exposure. Noting that you have to touch the camera to do that, it can cause some wobble to that star trail.
I tried it by hand a few times, but was never really happy with the result. Striving for that perfect line, I decided to design myself some gear that would allow me to do it using a motor.
The end product attaches directly to the lens with a Velcro strap and uses a stepper motor, speed controller, and a GT2 timing belt around the outside of the zoom ring. The speed controller allows me to speed up or slow down the motor speed depending on the exposure length I choose.

From Andrew about this image:
How is this for a camp site?
This is my shot of an evening unplugged in the spectacular Crowdy Bay National Park (NSW, Australia). Earlier that day, I was a little hesitant to begin the journey as the weather forecast showed 40% cloud cover. I rationalised that even if I couldn't shoot that night, it would be an awesome experience. After an hour's drive, I donned my pack for the walk in. Down on the rocks below I could see a few fishermen braving the swell (apparently without much luck), who returned to their cars just as the sun set below the hills behind us. Left alone, with a stillness in the air and the sounds of breaking surf, I thought: this is my version of heaven.
