Six months into the Russian invasion of Ukraine, @chien_ch_chang continues his documentation of the war, here focusing on civilians living in towns on the frontline:

Magnum photographer @chien_chi_chang has returned to Ukraine to continue documenting the scars of the war and the Ukrainian resistance, primarily in the Donbas region. In between each empty, ghostly frontline town, there are a few residents remaining and soldiers defending the land. On the road to each outpost, there are tens of millions of unharvested sunflowers in the fields and non-stop incoming and outgoing rocket shelling.

Photographs by @thomasdworzak illustrate a @codastory on Francisco Franco’s burial ground, The Valley of the Fallen – a gathering place for Spain’s new wave of fascists – and the family members fighting to exhume the remains of his victims buried together with the dictator.
"The Valley of the Fallen is an unavoidable totem of the fascist dictator who overthrew Spain’s republic during the Spanish civil war and ruled over the country for more than three decades. And it is a gauge by which memorializing and forgetting that brutal period of Spanish history is measured. And it is where, after decades of deferment, Spain’s national reckoning with its own history is convulsing," writes Isobel Cockerell.

@martinparrstudio's lesser known early work from his travels in China in 1985 has been published in a @caferoyalbooks zine.
Parr: "This was my first trip to China, I was with Jane Bown and Heather Angel. We had an exhibition on the 3rd floor of the geology museum in Beijing. We were hosted by the Chinese Photography Association, had many banquets and we spoke at a meeting, which was more like a rally. We were all mobbed. I had never experienced anything like it before, or indeed after!"

Sabiha Çimen's (@sabakhayr) work is on the cover of @time magazine: 'Afghan Women – A Year after The Taliban' ✨
For this cover story, a global team of female journalists and photographers spent time with eight Afghan women starting over abroad, with Çimen photographing Afghan Air Force pilots Hasina Najibi and Raihana Rahimi.
“They [Hasina and Raihana] were preparing to return from Dubai when the Taliban captured Kabul. Worried that the Taliban would take revenge on their families if they were discovered, they told their families to burn the uniforms they’d left at home, as well as their pilot IDs and diplomas. Najibi watched on a video call as her mother set her uniform alight. ‘All my dreams were on fire,’ she says, ‘and I was just watching,’” writes Farahnaz Forotan.
“Now, living together in the heat of southern Florida, the women wait tables in a strip mall. In the evenings, they put a rug under the tree near their apartment. They drink green tea and talk about their lives back in Afghanistan – and their biggest dream: to return to the skies."

One year after the fall of Kabul, Peter van Agtmael (@pvanagtmael) wrote and photographed a story about his return to Afghanistan for @vanityfair:
“After a failed attempt to enter Afghanistan during the 2021 American withdrawal, I finally made it back to Kabul this past May. The process to enter the country, in fact, is similar to that of my previous trips. Secure a visa, the same one as I’d received from the former U.S.-backed government. Buy a late-night ticket for the daily flight from Dubai to Kabul on Kam Air, which serves the same surprisingly delicious omelet. Get stamped through customs by immigration officers – in the same uniforms.”
He continues, “But upon leaving the airport, the changes begin to become apparent. Checkpoints are still everywhere, yet are now manned by the Taliban. The fighters are casual. The war is over and it seems like they need an activity to occupy their time. They particularly don’t like the tinted windows on the passing vehicles.”

Works by @rafal.milach from his project 'The First March of Gentlemen' illustrate a @codastory profiling Polish activists, historians, writers and educators pushing back against their government's nationalistic narrative about Polish actions during World War II.
"Around three million Polish Jews were murdered by the Nazis. It wasn’t until the 1960s that Polish communist authorities tolerated much discussion of the genocide. When they did – such as during an anti-semitic purge of the party in 1968 – it was to blame Jews for not showing enough gratitude towards ethnic Poles who tried to save them," writes Katia Patin.
Patin continues, "After the fall of communism, some of that silence was broken. More recently, the country’s ruling right-wing government has been consolidating a nationalistic narrative about the past that emphasizes pride over what they say are a politics of shame. It has been effective. Recent surveys show Polish people believe that more than half of Poles directly helped or hid Jews in their homes during Nazi occupation, an absurd overestimate."
