Ulysses S. Grant
A devoted family man and a private man. He was often self conscious about his appearance. The photo taken after Cold Harbor was one in which he did pose for a photographer. He was just given the massive casualty numbers from the last assault and he stares resolutely toward the enemy.

The bald eagle became the national bird of the United States of America in 1782. Our founding fathers were enamored with the Roman Republic’s government. The eagle was a potent symbol in Rome representing the military and political power of the Empire power of Christ, so it’s no surprise that an eagle was chosen to symbolise the new Republic.
