Opening April 23, Kehinde Wiley: An Archaeology of Silence is hosted at Fondazione Giorgio Cini as a Collateral Event of the 59th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. For this new body of work, Wiley sheds light on the brutalities of American and global colonial pasts using the language of the fallen hero.
The exhibition will include a collection of new monumental paintings and sculptures depicting young Black men and women in positions of vulnerability that tell a story of survival and resilience, revealing the beauty that can emerge from the horrific. These poses, borrowed from Western European art historical sources, function as beautiful elegies echoing a central metaphor of youth and resilience and stand as monuments to endurance and perseverance in the face of savagery, incorporating a scale that pushes beyond the mere corporeal and into the realm of spiritual icons, of martyrs and saints.
The exhibition is curated by Christophe Leribault, President of the Musée d’Orsay and Musée de l’Orangerie, who organized “Kehinde Wiley: Lamentation”, Wiley’s first exhibition in France at the Petit Palais in 2016. Now on view at the National Gallery of London (@nationalgallery) American artist Kehindewiley explores the artistic conventions and canons of the Western landscape tradition in his new exhibition, 'Kehinde Wiley at the National Gallery: The Prelude'.
Wiley’s images – as part quotation, part intervention – raise questions about power, privilege, identity, and above all highlight the absence or marginalization of Black figures within European art.
Situated in the Sunley Room, at the centre of the collection, this free exhibition draws out the dynamic relationship between Wiley's transcendental works and the National Gallery's historical landscapes and seascapes by artists such as Claude, Friedrich, Turner and Vernet.
Prelude (Babacar Mané), based on Caspar David Friedrich's Wanderer above the Sea of Fog, takes its title from the William Wordsworth poem, "The Prelude". This work, along with Prelude (Ibrahima Ndiaye and El Hadji Malick Gueye), are Kehinde Wiley's first paintings referencing the works of Friedrich. Friedrich's original painting is reworked to feature a black man from Dakar, continuing Wiley's tradition of incorporating black figures into the canon of Western portraiture.
Today, Kehinde Wiley reveals the
KW limited-edition apparel and merchandise collection
featuring a selection of the artist's personal favorite
compositions from his archive. Conceived, curated,
and created for those who desire art and color in their
lives, the KW collection offers a new opportunity to
engage with Wiley's bold and beautiful paintings while
supporting Black Rock Senegal. The collection will be
available for pre-orders on Wednesday, December
15th at 10am with the majority of products shipping
before the end of the year.
Available items include basketballs, decks of playing
cards, pajamas, postcards, puffer coats, scarves,
sweatshirts and t-shirts. Each item is inspired by one
of Kehinde Wiley's paintings, with designs adapted
