FAT PATCH COLLECTION
1998 Adelaide away jersey (game worn)
'The Golden Fleece'
One of the reasons I adore season 1998 so much is that the game, the rules and the jerseys were still in an absolute state of chaos post reunification.
There is no better example of this than the fact that the NRL somehow signed off on two separate NRL sides having EXACTLY THE SAME COLOURS 😂. Even better, neither team had an away jersey.
R24 marked the fateful day the Knights and Rams were due to meet for the first time, and it was the Rams who had to come up with alternative strip for the game. Known to collectors as the 'Golden Fleece' this genuine Wonder of the World is what they cooked up.
For reasons that are totally inexplicable to me, they gave the jersey a dry run in a HOME game v the Bears the week before, losing 36-0. They then rocked out to an early 20-4 lead v Newcastle, before getting mowed down 34-20.
A few things about this jersey
1. The only RL cotton Nike jersey in existence. I have no idea why they did this, given the home jerseys are poly!
2. No retails were made, all that exist are the 20 or so worn in the final two rounds of 1998.
3. Two players wore this jersey. Jamie McDonald definitely wore it v the Knights, and I believe it was Rocket Rod Jensen v the Bears. I need to access Big League for r23 to confirm Rocket Rod though.
4. IMO this is the ultimate Fat Patch 98 Grail. Technically there are a couple of jerseys just as rare, if not rarer, but I think on combination of rarity, obscurity, defunct values and just the vibe, this is the best.
Enjoy!
