Two arctic terns–an adult feeding its young—are in perfect alignment on a floating ice sheet in Iceland. The beauty of life is at its purest in the planet's harshest environments.

"The ghost of the lava field"
Only a third of Iceland’s foxes wear white winter coats—good camouflage in snow or among the mountains but conspicuous on dark lava fields. The click of the camera shutter woke this dozing individual, which glared at me for a few seconds before scampering off.

"Hagafjell"
Mossy ridges of hyaloclastite typify the landscape in the southern uplands in Iceland. Here the rays of the evening sun peep through lowering banks of cloud to illuminate a mountain (text by @unnurjokla from our book Iceland in all its splendour).

In the coming weeks I am going to share earlier work that is available in the Fjellheimen Galleri webshop. To begin with, you can enjoy images from Iceland...
"Landmannalaugar #1"
Colourful rhyolite is formed in mountains when silicon-rich elements of the Earth’s crust melt, and the viscous fluid is forced to the surface like toothpaste squeezed from a tube. The rugged yet colourful nature of Landmannalaugar with its rhyolite landscape has long made it a favorite with visitors in Iceland. Laurel forests—found in Madeira, the Canaries, and the Azores—are living relics of the southern European stands that thrived millions of years ago. Growing at an altitude ranging from about 600 to 1300m, the laurels are found in the ribbon of mist that frequently wraps the upper ranges of the islands, creating the cloud forests of the temperate zone.

In the Muddus National Park (Sweden), forests alternate with wetlands. Here, October snow covers the ground beneath a mixed boreal forest amid the intricate patterns of string bogs.

The Italian Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park is home to some of the oldest beech forests in Europe that kept me in awe of the power that forests shielded from exploitation can possess. Thanks to a location that’s difficult to access, these trees have escaped felling for centuries.
The May issue of @NGM is devoted to forests, see my PROOF story “Still standing tall” following the link below:
