@michaelcolovos wants his new denim brand @unifiedunlimited to feel like a family in every regard—not any traditional family, built with inherent hierarchies, but a chosen family rooted in collaboration, made up of designers, artists, models, and really anyone who puts their jeans on. Document joined Unified’s family—a natural fit, with a shared ethos rooted in collectability over consumerism—to make a zine for our tenth anniversary issue which debuts Colovos’s first five denim designs. At the link in our bio, Colovos joins Document to discuss the eternal power of denim and the making of the zine.

Ever since @ashtondsanders’s breakout role in ‘Moonlight,’ it’s hard not to focus on the actor’s highlight reel since 2016: He’s worked alongside his idol Denzel Washington, he’s a four-time guest at the Met Gala, and he’s even launched his own production company, 1237 Production, all before turning 30. It can be all too alluring to applaud the accolades of our heroes, rather than the diligence it has taken to make it to those destinations. In connecting with Ashton, though, the first thing you’ll learn is that front rows and afterparties have only been a small part of his vast journey into the public eye. At the link in our bio, the actor connects with curator @museummammy for our Summer/Pre-Fall 2022 issue to reflect on the inextricable link between art and chaos.

Photographer @fredericlagrange accredits the goodness he has encountered across the globe to faith. Travel is ripely suited for memory-making and personal evolution. What holds strongest is not the grandeur of venerable architecture or the weight of a new weatherscape, but the strangers amid it all who, even momentarily, jump into your reality, re-orienting your experience—sometimes subtly, and other times with a heavy hand. Lagrange traversed the world’s continents in search of the people and places that are hardest to reach. In these spaces—to which he has no existing relationships and where he usually does not speak the language—he has been struck with an immensity of kindness and a willingness to open doors, homes, and hearts to a stranger. For our Tenth Anniversary, the photographer presents the most memorable moments of his career in a series of portraits. Tap the link in our bio to read.

“When I’m making music, I feel in control regardless of how chaotic or intense my feelings are, and I don’t really feel like that at all in my daily life,” says musician Mike Hadreas. In the six albums he’s released under the moniker @perfumegenius, Hadreas has harnessed music to explore trauma, devotion, pain, and pleasure, creating shimmering experimental pop ballads about everything from erotic asphyxiation to the erosion of the body, a fascination informed by his personal struggle with Crohn’s disease. At the link in our bio, the musician reflects on the physicality of emotions and using anxiety as artistic fuel for our Tenth Anniversary issue.

Photographer @beautifulandcandid and stylist @dianaschoi meet the creatives shaping the new wave of Dominican culture for Document Online. “Each part of this island is art—the colors, the accent of each province— [it has] a wealth of complexity that only its people can provide because of our history. It’s [driven by a desire] to express ourselves in a unique way that is identified wherever we are.” Head to the link in our bio to hear from the artists and activists who are engaging with the history and ideologies of the island to define the new cultural zeitgeist.

Mapping a modern trans bohemia in the borough of the flesh. For our Tenth Anniversary issue, writer @mckenziewark3000 highlights the importance of the corridor along the G train as a nexus of trans-creative communities. From @macyrodman and @gothjafar in Bushwick, to writer (and raver) @malefragility across the Gowanus Canal, onto Flatbush where @plettsky and @intermittentcat launched their new trans publishing house—@littlepusspress—and more, Wark outlines community on the margins of straight life at the link in our bio.

“There will always be plenty of kids in little homes in the middle of nowhere, across the country and across the world, who feel like they’re the only person who is going through what they’re going through.” In the three years since she began releasing music under the name Ethel Cain, Hayden Anhedönia (@mothercain) has garnered critical acclaim for her smoldering pop and alt-rock anthems about love and loss on the American outskirts. But unlike the vision of patriotic nostalgia championed by others, Anhedönia’s Southern Gothic is one viewed without rose-tinted glasses. Instead, she exposes the country’s dark underbelly in songs about poverty, substance abuse, violent impulses, and religious angst, written from the perspective of her alter-ego, Ethel. At the link in our bio, Anhedönia reflects on the end of her alter-ego (and birth of a new one, Ethel’s mother), experiencing spirituality as a flash of inspiration, and chronicling the unseen realities of life on the fringes.

Actor Sigourney Weaver and filmmaker @jamescameronofficial first collaborated on ‘Aliens.’ After reigniting their creative relationship with the ‘Avatar’ series, the master storytellers connect for our Summer/Pre-Fall 2022 issue to talk about the two projects and surviving the chaos of filmmaking. “I feel like shooting can wear down a story. It can defeat the story. It has to have a strong enough structure to stay standing after the chaos and bloodshed of filming.”
Head to the link in our bio to read their full conversation.
