I hear that many people made the decision to “log out” from social media this week. Sounds convenient and comfortable. But now is not the time to be comfortable. We have to keep using our channels, we have to stay committed. For the sake of this fight. Social media is a crucial tool for advocating anti-racism and to educate yourself. I know that criticism is sometimes tough to handle and that it can feel very shameful to be criticized. “Whatever I do I do it wrong” “Damned if you do, damned if you don’t ” etc. The easy way out of that is to remain silent. But we just can’t remain silent right now. What we can do is listen, learn and help black voices get heard. Help reaching out and encourage people to sign petitions, donate, to participate in protests, to educate themselves. I know we have a harsh environment and a lot of tension. I want to encourage all of you to stay kind to everyone trying to contribute to this fight. If you see a hashtag that is inappropriate, make a friendly loving reminder. If you feel like someone isn’t doing enough, encourage them lovingly. Because this has just begun. We still have a very long way to go. And the last thing we need is to lose voices, to have people logging out because they are too afraid to make fools of themselves. Educate each other, strengthen each other. Because it takes strength to have those uncomfortable conversations with friends and family members. It takes strength to fight racial injustice. It takes strength to start a revolution. Stay united, stay focused. And keep going.
