China is actively pursuing investment in Azerbaijan through the Belt and Road Initiative to take advantage of its strategic position in Central Asia, experts said, even as Baku maintains rigid limits on foreign capital inflows, thwarting Chinese efforts to invest in the service sector.
The state of Azerbaijan has one of the highest energy self-sufficiency ratios in the world, but that also means that the country has to deal with a huge greenhouse gas emission rate, which stood, in 2012, at 69 MtCO₂e (million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent). Azerbaijan aims to reduce its emission by 35% by 2030. Along with this commitment, the Azerbaijani government also intends to take action to increase the share of renewables in total electricity production to 30% by 2030. The current policy brief aims at introducing current climate trends in Azerbaijan, existing legal and policy frameworks as well as an analysis of the current pathway towards meeting its target.
