John Lennon in a scene with actress Anna Quayle for The Beatlesā first film, A Hard Dayās Night. In this scene, Anna Quayle first recognizes John Lennon, yet he pretends he is not the famous John Lennon. After a few moments of conversation, Anna puts on her glasses and says, āYou donāt look like him at all...ā
During the first few days of filming, The Beatles had a terrible time. The group were musicians ā not actors ā though they tried to be as this would bring them even more success, if that was even possible in the height of 1964. They got their inspiration from Elvis, who broke out into films after his major success in music. For the first few days of filming, all four of The Beatles were nervous, causing some disruption in the scenes. This was seen during the ātrain bitā at the beginning of the film, which was one of the first scenes to be filmed. Besides the nerves of the four young men, other problems arose, such as audio issues, which caused the scenes to have to be redone multiple times.
John Lennon later said in 1964 that, āThe train bit embarrasses us now. Iām sure itās less noticeable to people watching in the cinema, but we know that weāre dead conscious in every move we make, we watch each other. Paulās embarrassed when Iām watching him speak and he knows I am. You can see the nervous bits normally in pictures: things like the end ā you make that on one day, and on the next day you do the beginning. But we did it almost in sequence. The first we did was the train, which we were all dead nervous in. Practically the whole of the train bit we were going to pieces.ā

āWhen I first heard āHeartbreak Hotelāā¦ me whole life changed from then on, I was just completely shaken by it,ā John Lennon
In April of 1956, 15 year-old John Lennon heard Heartbreak Hotel sing from the radio by a new voice ā a new voice to the UK, that is ā Elvis Presley. While John had always been connected to music, something about this new sound inspired him ā he not only wanted to listen to Elvis, but he wanted to be Elvis.
Immediately, John began to dress like Elvis, look like Elvis, and act just as Elvis did on those bright American stages. He even began to slick his hair back just like the rock n roll star. āIt was Elvis who really got me hooked for beat music. When I heard 'Heartbreak Hotel' I thought, 'this is it', and I started trying to grow sideboards and all that gear,ā said John Lennon in 1963. By the end of 1956, John Lennon had formed his own group under the name The Quarrymen.
Elvis represented what success looked like, and John Lennon wanted to have what he had ā the fame, the wealth, the record label and millions of devoted fans. And after years of hard work, the group John Lennon had formed that had evolved into The Beatles, finally achieved the success Elvis had found. āThere's only one person in the United States we ever wanted to meet. We just idolized him so much. The only person we wanted to meet in the USA was Elvis Presley,ā John Lennon later said. The Beatles finally met their hero at his California home in August of 1965. Star struck, The Beatles could barely believe they were in the home of Elvis Presley, that they were meeting the man that had inspired them to get into music.
In 1980, John Lennon said, āWithout Elvis, there would be no Beatles.ā Even after all of these years, both The Beatles and Elvis Presley remain the best selling artists in the history of music and continue to draw in more fans.
