Did you know? 🤔 All of the giant planets in our solar system have rings around them. Saturn might be the planet that we associate with rings, but Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune also have pretty sizable rings too. Astronomers learned about Jupiter’s rings back in the early 1600s, and since then it has been studied thoroughly. Jupiter's rings are very faint and made of dust and small pieces of rocks, not ice! ⠀⠀⠀⠀ In 1979, the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft discovered rings near Jupiter. They consist of very small dust grains (0.2-200 microns). ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile has captured the most detailed image ever taken of the Medusa Nebula (also known Abell 21 and Sharpless 2-274). As the star at the heart of this nebula made its final transition into retirement, it shed its outer layers into space, forming this colourful cloud. The image foreshadows the final fate of the Sun, which will eventually also become an object of this kind.
