According to a federal monitor, the New York Police Department continues to violate a court order by underreporting the rate that cops use controversial stop-and-frisk practices.
While the NYPD has made “significant strides in meeting the court’s requirement," per a 169-page status report filed in Manhattan federal court, “there is still additional work that needs to be done” and “the issue of underreporting of stops remains a concern." The underreporting by the NYPD also prevents progress from being properly judged off stats provided.

(CW/TW: Death by suicide, self-harm, violence)
Michael Nieves—who was taken off life support on Tuesday—is the 13th person to die in city custody, or shortly after being released, at the Rikers Island jail complex this year. The rate of death at Rikers Island is on pace to exceed 2021, when 16 people died.
Two Correction Officers and a Captain watched Michael bleed out for 10 minutes before action was taken. He slit his own throat with a razor provided for him by Correction Officers that was not retrieved prior to him returning to his cell after a shower. This instance is emblematic of the decades of corruption and mismanagement on the island. It further proves that New York City is unable to improve the deadly human rights crisis manufactured by the Department of Correction.
Since Mayor Eric Adams entered office at the beginning of 2022, 12 detained people died on Rikers Island because of suicide, overdoses, and medical issues — all of which were preventable. In 2022, violence among detainees is up 40% compared to 2021. Staff incompetence and corruption is also up while accountability is down.
Federal receivership is the ONLY solution. Sign our petition to help make sure jails are actually safe for detainees AND staff at the link in our bio.
Today’s 13th death in 2022 is another reminder that going to Rikers is a death sentence, like it was for Elijah Muhammad who was locked illegally in a tiny shower cell for 30 hours before he died.
Eric Adams is unfit to run Rikers.
