GRAVITY
Store design for @axelarigato in London @sefridges

A space where generic elements of architecture are shifted, misplaced, reversed. A glitch space trying to escape gravity

FIELDS is what surrounds us.
constructions of nature – endlessly expanding in fields.
FIELDS is a collection of “organs without a body” laid down vertically in series, as far as the geometry of this room permits it. Even if they are not all the same, fields are one. A condition with no alternatives.
Patterns in fields are different, and figures in the patterns are once again different. In fields, there are no places, only positions. Objects are purely defined by their relationship to each other.
While fields exist through contrast, it lies outside the binary opposition of nature and culture. From the point of view of nature, it is austere, patterned, compromised and redundant. From the point of view of culture, it is chaotic, invasive, phantasmic, and contemplative.
FIELDS are a landscape not because they are natural or green, but because they have no center and expand horizontally:
An evenly covered territory organized as a 5x4 grid of floral compositions, each sitting in a dedicated aluminum container.

Visual campaign for our upcoming collection of aluminium vases. The work targets contemporary notions of functionalism, design ego, minimalism, nature vs culture, technicality, and of course, floral composition.

LEVEL 3 - PAINTINGS
Correcting reality by the use of copying and advanced mimetic technics was a highly skilled practice during renaissance times.
Skills that got so developed that they led a generation of artists, across the 14th to the 17th century, not only to discover the principle of perspective, but also to implement the very first prototypes of what would become photography, trompe l’œil, collage, surrealism, advertisement, ready-mades, bootlegs, hyperreality, deep-fake, GAN’s and face filtering.
At the end of the 19th century, while figuration was only about to start its legendary battle against abstraction, a less expected, more alternative branch of classicism connected with what would embodied the dark side of artistic practices, literally its most obscure form : intellectual or conceptual art.
The paintings you are looking at are somehow hidding somewhere on this way and as expected, are not very visually comforting.
They are not beautiful, nor they are smart, accurate, relevant, precise, pleasing, fun or meanigful.
They are ideas. They are weird. They are mixed-feelings, they are hybrid emotions.

LEVEL 2 - MATERIALS
When finally “attitude becomes nothing”, one could wonder what his own physical presence is actually made of.
Wrapped in its first, second and third skins, he could find himself lost in the sometimes conflicting but always tangible reality of its layered existence.
This is perhaps why the body, the clothing, and the space, all meet here and merge in their most organic yet static form.
The three skins are cohabiting and together they melt and fuse, they fight and dance. They give answers to questions you did not asked.
They connect and oppose in a competitive relationship where everything becomes bones, stitches, nerves, walls, seams, muscles, skins, threads, structure, folds, floors, cuts, windows, strings, edges, surfaces, textures and energy.
They have nothing to loose and nothing to seek. They simply stands there.

LEVEL 1 - ATELIER
A process that never ends. A cycle, to be correct.
A production chain that starts right where the consumer stops but keeps running after him, exploring what he left behind, restoring his needs and challenging his taste.
A methodology that has nothing to hide and escapes the old debates. One that absorbs both newness and vintage, ugly and beautiful, hype and timelessness.
A process that looks into the past to see the future. A process of the present, that ultimately becomes more than a product.

LEVEL 0 - STORE
It may be a different kind of museum’s store. An uncertain one. Perhaps a progressive one, tough an unfinished one.
One that could equally be the first or last destination of your visit.
A space that tries to exist in-between : half store, half gallery, half entrance, half exit, half hidden, half exposed, half yours, half ours, half built, half open.
A space for encounters, naturally full of doubts and convictions.

« Finding ways to challenge the minds of the young has always been a goal of Johnson's.
When he was a high school science teacher, two of his students actually built the first experimental test scoring machine, know today as Hard Drive.
The two boys had been assigned to Johnson by the court to work out a sentence for stealing a radio from the school.
Johnson turned the sentence into a learning experience for the boys, and the three ultimately became the leading innovation team in computer hardware development at IBM. »
