#amfAR’s VP of Research Dr. Rowena Johnston breaks down the latest round of amfAR funding in 2 minutes! These 5 researchers have brilliant ideas and are each taking a unique approach to #CureAIDS.
As #Monkeypox cases rise, particularly among members of the #LGBTQ+ community, public health response has been slow. amfAR and the O’Neill Institute have issued a policy brief urging specific action in order to prevent further spread of the disease. Read the full brief through the link in our bio.
Ten years ago today, the FDA approved Truvada for PrEP, the first antiretroviral medication to prevent HIV transmission. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an incredibly useful tool in the fight against HIV: it’s 99% effective with consistent adherence. But 10 years in, issues of equity persist. Only about 25% of the 1.2 million Americans who could benefit from the medication take it. The vast majority (65%) of PrEP users are white and while Black people account for 42% of all new HIV diagnoses in the U.S., only 9% of PrEP users are Black. Only 10% are women.
Expanding access, and doing so with equity in mind, must be a priority if we’re to meaningfully diminish the impact of HIV.
Today we remember Dr. Mathilde Krim on what would have been her 96th birthday. As amfAR’s founding chairman and inspirational leader, Dr. Krim is deeply engrained in amfAR’s history and is missed every day. We continue her critical work to #CureAIDS as we return to Venice for #amfARVenezia, September 7, and commemorate the last time she was there in 2000.
#TBT to a @jeanpaulgaultier fashion show benefiting #amfAR in 1992, where @madonna drew gasps from the audience with her risqué and revealing black dress. Thirty years on, at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week, July 6, @kimkardashian reprised the outfit with a less controversial version.

amfAR condemns the Supreme Court’s decision to repeal Roe v. Wade, announced on Friday. The decision will do wholesale damage to the provision of healthcare in America and will undermine efforts to end the HIV epidemic. Read amfAR’s full statement through the link in our bio.
During Pride Month – and throughout the year – we celebrate all members of the LGBTQ+ community. At amfAR, this spirit of inclusivity guides our work: advocating for and funding research to benefit all people living with or vulnerable to HIV infection. Our commitment is to work toward a world where everyone has access to lifesaving HIV medication and where no one feels the sting of HIV stigma. From all of us at amfAR, Happy #Pride! 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
A charming photograph taken in 1995 shows our Founding Chairman Dr. Mathilde Krim riding down Fifth Avenue with Mr. Leather in New York City’s Pride March. We have achieved a great deal since then but we have learned this week how fragile our rights and protections can be. As always, this Pride we stand shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters in the LGBTQ community. As we work toward a cure for HIV, we will redouble our efforts to oppose and condemn homophobia, transphobia and discrimination wherever we find them.
#amfARINNOVATIONS is out now! The latest edition of amfAR’s biannual newsletter includes research advances, policy insights, global HIV news, and more! Link in bio.
Though #AIDS is no longer a death sentence, it remains a life sentence of pill regimens and stigma. And that stigma is even more pronounced for the LGBTQ community.
