Julie Mehretu
Stadia I, 2004
ink and acrylic paint on canvas
At SFMoMA
From the museum’s wall label:
Mehretu has explained that the canvas "reflects the space of a stadium playing upon nationalist reactionary energy ... [and] containing corporate language and all that is associated with this phenomena."
Mehretu began this work by using a computer to manipulate various images, including flags, the Olympic rings, and corporate and broadcasting logos. The canvas's complex surface, created by building up layers of acrylic paint that have been sprayed on and then sanded, is crafted to resemble Mylar, a synthetic material associated with architectural drawings and graphic design.
