The South West Coast Path is 630 miles long and is currently the longest National Trail in the UK. It is protected, maintained and improved by the SWCP association which is a charity, one of which we are fundraising for.
'As it threads its way around the coastline, the Coast Path passes through a number of National Nature Reserves and Heritage Coasts, five Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, two World Heritage Sites, a UNESCO designated Biosphere reserve and a Geopark, as well as one National Park'. That's quite a special trail that's worth looking after don't you think?
It costs on average £1,400 per mile to look after the path. Though this is likely to rise in the coming years. This trail attracts people from all over the world and for fair reason. Though more hikers and explorers means more wear and tear.
Climate change is having a huge effect on the SWCP. Erosion due to higher sea levels, larger waves and fierce storms. There are several sections with inland diversions due to the cliff faces which have fallen into the sea or are too unstable. High winds such as Storm Eunice which hit earlier this year can also have a devastating impact. There are lots of wooded sections along the path and storms like this can cause trees to fall, block the path and cause landslides.
This National trail is part of England's history, it's the connect between two natural environments of land and sea, it has stunning views at every turn and in its simplest form is just a great place to get out for a walk.
