“Max, you’re a star. Thank you so much. I’m no longer dreading my future thanks to your advice and guidance.” Some words from a talk that I gave on Friday. I spent the weekend at a pagan camp, in a field in Nuneaton, and on the Friday, I gave a talk on sensory loss and paganism. I was nervous because I hadn’t planned anything, and there were too many options, and too many things to talk about. 3 people came to my talk, and that was absolutely perfect. I asked my audience what had bought them here, and the lovely human who’s kind words you read, told me that she had recently joined the deaf community, and was due to get hearing aids.
She was nervous about the process of getting hearing aids, what that would mean for her, and how being deaf might affect her practice. My talk became an intimate discussion with her and her two friends she had brought with her for support. We talked about how helpful hearing aids have been for me, how to decorate them, how I handle them in rituals, and how being deaf impacts being a druid. We talked about all the different ways we can bypass hearing. How we can make guided meditations accessible. All the other senses we can use in place of hearing. We talked and talked until the next speaker came along to shoo us out.
I had the pleasure of watching these three humans get excited about how to include each other in their work with their new found toolkit of things to try. It was the most wholesome, and most humbling thing. I am so proud to be able to do what I do 🧡
