My emergency fund has saved my arse a few times and I'm not quite sure how I ever managed without one. The general consensus is that you should have between 3 and 6 months' worth of monthly expenses . If your job is secure, such as teacher, the aim is 3 months. If your income is irregular, you're self employed or you don't have secure employment, you should aim for at least 6 months. What constitutes an emergency? Something that is unexpected and sudden, such as a broken boiler or illness which prevents you from working and earning.
