My emergency fund has saved my arse a few times and I'm not quite sure how I ever managed without one. The general consensus is that you should have between 3 and 6 months' worth of monthly expenses . If your job is secure, such as teacher, the aim is 3 months. If your income is irregular, you're self employed or you don't have secure employment, you should aim for at least 6 months. What constitutes an emergency? Something that is unexpected and sudden, such as a broken boiler or illness which prevents you from working and earning. As soon as you use some or all of your emergency fund, you should top it right back up again, ready for the next inevitable catastrophe!
