AL DIMEOLA, JOHN McLAUGHLIN, PACO DeLUCIA — SATURDAY NIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO 2022, Impex Records/Columbia: IMP6045. Personnel: Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, Paco Delucia - acoustic guitars. Acoustic guitar fans have long admired the classic album Friday Night in San Francisco — a brilliant live recording captured before a highly charged audience at the Warfield Auditorium. The expertly recorded concert, by engineer Tim Pinch and with a great production by Columbia Records, has long been a favorite. Pinch also recorded the Saturday night date, and those tapes lay undisturbed for about 40 years in DiMeola’s basement until forces converged to create this overdue release. It’s six tracks hold their own against the Friday night in this impeccable LP: three pieces for the trio, one composed by each musician, and solo pieces for each. What’s amazing in both albums is how these three guitarists — one from the USA, one from Spain and one from England — each with their own guitar background and style — work so well as a trio: inspired competition that pushed each really hard. A fascinating side note from Charles Granata’s excellent liner notes: the idea of the concerts as originally pitched to DiMeola by promoter Barrie Marshall was to have guitarist Leo Kottke (another big favorite of mine). DiMeola said, “That sounds a little strange, but nevertheless it could be great.” But eventually the trio was the one heard on these two great albums — a weekend of smash guitar music for the ages.
