THE JAZZ MESSENGERS AT THE CAFE BOHEMIA VOLUME 1
1956, Blue Note Records, playing a 1985 BN/Manhattan Records, direct metal mastering, mono reissue, produced in France: BST 81507. Personnel: Art Blakey — drums; Kenny Dorham — trumpet; Hank Mobley — tenor saxophone; Horace Silver — piano; Doug Watkins — bass.
At the Cafe Bohemia, Vol. 1 is a live album and featured the original incarnation of the Jazz Messengers, Art Blakey's career-spanning band, and is the first of two volumes recorded on November 23, 1955, at Café Bohemia, a famous night club in Greenwich Village in New York.
The opening track, “Soft Winds,” is cracking and throughout the five tracks of Vol. 1 (Vol. 2 has five tracks from the same date), Dorham’s trumpet playing is on point. Blakey, as usual, does great drum/percussion work. “Prince Albert” is a rousing way to conclude Vol. 1.
In a 3.5-star AllMusic review, Michael G. Nastos writes: “This first volume of live performance from the Cafe Bohemia in New York City circa late 1955 is a rousing set of hard bop by the masters who signified its sound, and expanded on the language of modern jazz. [The] tracks …emphasize not only the inherent power of Blakey's band and drumming, but demarcate the simplicity of melodic statements that were a springboard for the fantastic soloing by these individuals who would follow those tuneful lines. Dorham is responsible for this edict …[This album] wets the whistle and leaves the listener wanting more, knowing the best is yet to come.”
