#PaperAlert 🚨
A new publication lead by marine biologist Aura Rodriguez and coauthored by MigraMar Members has just been published by Marine Environmental Research.
Aura worked in evaluating the future changes in the distribution of the scalloped hammerhead shark Sphyrna lewini. According to her results, this species faces the risk of migrating southwards in seek of favorable sea temperature conditions. Sharks like this are ectothermic, which means they rely on the environment to control their body temperature. Sea surface temperature are rising worldwide due to climate change, and it is expected the conditions will worsen at the end of the 2100’s. With this change, the hammerhead is expected to migrate towards favorable conditions, potentially away from current spatial regulations that are in place to protect this and other migratory species.
