GAMIFICATION MYTH - This one came up on a recent talk that I delivered. "If I play games with my audience they might think I'm tricking them into buying when they don't want to"" Righto - time to talk about consent! When I work with clients or teach Gamification I use what we call ethical gamification. Gamification works best when your audience has the CHOICE to opt in or opt out If you put a game into your social channels you can so without asking for a sale - to play with your audience and increase engagement. If they choose to engage, that's up to them. They don't have to. Nobody is forcing them. If someone chooses to purchase your course which has gamification built in to help them get better results... as long as there are parts that they can opt out of, it's no biggy. If people choose to join your free challenge which is full of gamification.. it's free. They can leave at any time. You'll only be tricking people if you are TRYING to trick people. People on the whole see through games for the sake of it and through attempts to manipulate them. You'd have to try pretty hard to be underhanded about this kinda stuff! Regardless, ethical gamification is the way forward for us and our clients. Simples! . . .
