On this day, August 23, 1914, the Irish Guards received their first Battle Honour for their heroic involvement in the Retreat from Mons. As part of the 4th Guards Brigade.
Until the outbreak of World War I, the unit was stationed at home on ceremonial duties. Its 1st Battalion was sent to France eight days after the war was declared in August 1914 the Irish Guards were firmly entrenched on the Western Front, in September 1915, it was joined there by the newly formed 2nd Battalion (which was disbanded in 1919).
During its service on the Frontline, the regiment received four Victoria Crosses (VC) and participated in numerous battles, including the Battle of Mons (1914),
