Desert View Cultural Demonstrators this week
Today, Thursday, July 7, and tomorrow, Friday, July 8, 2022, meet Rose Bighorse -Navajo Weaver, and Henry Nez -Navajo Silversmith.
Ask a ranger at Desert View’s outdoor visitor center for their location. The visitor center is located on the north end of the main parking lot, under the large shade structure.
· Rose Bighorse was born just outside of Grand Canyon National Park’s eastern boundary, near Shadow Mountain. She originally took up weaving to help her mother finish large rugs. Today, Rose still enjoys weaving traditional rugs, but her specialty is weaving pillows, purses and clothing. Her designs are intricate, one of a kind, and she has received blue ribbons for them in the past.
· A silversmith for 41 years, Henry Nez specializes in different techniques and designs. He is known for his silver bracelets and rings that are inlayed with natural stones. He also crafts necklaces, bolo ties, and earnings. Henry will demonstrate how he makes these items from start to finish.
The Cultural Demonstration Program provides an opportunity to interact with Tribal artisans from Grand Canyon's Traditionally Associated Tribes, and for them to share their culture, knowledge and skills.
