From the 15th century onwards, a popular tradition associated madness with a stone lodged in the brain.
In “The Extraction of the Stone of Madness“ by the Dutch artist #HieronymusBosch, a man is trepanned by a surgeon whose upside-down funnel hat marks him as charlatan. The image is inscribed with a reference to this folk belief, but the object being extracted from the patient’s brain is not, however, a stone, but rather a lily bulb.
