All of the giant planets in our solar system have rings around them. Saturn might be the planet that we associate with rings, but Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune also have pretty sizable rings too. Astronomers learned about Jupiterโs rings back in the early 1600s, and since then it has been studied thoroughly. Jupiter's rings are very faint and made of dust and small pieces of rocks, not ice! โ โ โ โ
In 1979, the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft discovered rings near Jupiter. They consist of very small dust grains (0.2-200 microns). These dust particles gradually fall into the atmosphere of Jupiter, and their place is taken by others that are formed when small satellites, especially Amalthea (Jupiter's moon), collide with meteorite bodies.
