An issue I am bumping into since I live in England. Although my English is ok, there are of course words I don’t know or I don’t pronounce correctly. As a scientist I am reading a lot of research articles and as a book lover I try to read as many books in their original language as I can. So I know a lot of words but have no idea if I am saying them right. I like to learn and improve but laughing about me or making jokes about my mispronouncing doesn’t help at all. De facto it makes me insecure and makes me feel like an idiot. Just a reminder to those who laugh: English is my second language, every word I am saying to you I know at least in one other language, while you grew up singing in your own language, I always was singing in a foreign language trying to get what they were singing, while you have an accent from the area you grew up (and yes everybody in UK has an accent) my accent represents where I am coming from. I try to speak as precisely correct as I can and trying to pronounce it in British English but believe me it is not easy to live and work in a foreign language. So next time don’t laugh just help me do it right the next time!
