When I was 19, fired up, and ready to change the world with my art & activism; I had a Professor that held up a mirror in the most honestly brutal way. It was in one of many social change courses I’d take for Urban Studies. There we were. Young radicals! (in our minds,) and that professor blankface said,
“You’ve already sold out. This is NYU. What is this if not a brand? A brand you wanted and are paying for.”
Talk about a knock out.
The reality is, unless you truly live off the grid, you will participate in industries and systems that cause harm. Who you choose to be, and how you operate in these systems still makes a tremendous difference. I always try to look for alternative ways of being. I don’t always succeed, but I do always try.
Sometimes all it takes is for one person to go…but how about…THIS way?
