Do you notice feeling a little more drained recently?
If so, you might be experiencing symptoms of burnout.
Burnout doesn’t just happen. You don’t wake up one day and suddenly have it. It’s like a slow leak which builds over time. And this is a good thing because you can recognize the warning signs and make changes before the leak becomes an overwhelming flood.
Burnout consists of 3 core components.
~ Emotional exhaustion: the physical and emotional fatigue that comes from caring too much, for too long
~ Cynicism and detachment: depletion of empathy, caring, and compassion
~ Decreased sense of accomplishment: feeling that nothing you do makes much of a difference
These components exist along a continuum so you may notice a few or all of them at a time.
To avoid burnout creeping up on you, it’s a good idea to check in with yourself and your feelings a few times a day. By increasing your emotional awareness, you’ll expand your perspective to include not just stressful external experiences but also your responses to these experiences. This shift empowers you to notice signs of burnout earlier rather than later and make positive changes to shift the balance in your favor.
