In the flooded waterscape of Botswana's Okavango Delta, elephants acts as ecosystem engineers, using their massive bodies to carve pathways through thick vegetation that blankets the area's channels and spillways. The crisscrossed network of trails the elephants leave in their wake is utilised by many other species as they traverse the drenched landscape. This web of interspecies connection is vital to the health of the Okavango ecosystem – if one species vanishes, others will also suffer in their absence.
We, too, depend on other species for our survival – a fact that has become abundantly clear in recent years. Biodiversity helps shape nations and sustain livelihoods. If we do not protect the natural world, it will be at our own peril.
This #BiodiversityDay let’s remind ourselves what's at stake and commit to taking action now.
