Dubček was a Slovak politician who was First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and who played a prominent role during the Prague Spring in 1968. Following the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Union and other Warsaw Pact member states and the suppression of reform efforts, Dubček was forced to resign. He rose to prominence again during and after the Velvet Revolution in 1989. At the time of his death in a car crash in 1992, he was the Chairman of the Federal Assembly of Czechoslovakia.
