Oak and Ash.
This ancient hollowed (still healthy) ash tree sits on the brow of a south facing hillside. l halt here every afternoon to watch the lowering sun and the long silhouette shadows revealing lost medieval strip field patterns below. The grassy knoll with a 360’ field of vision feels as if it has always been a significant point to rest and muse.
The sinuous oak spoon which lays beneath, was carved from a large riven bough which had laid beside the ash tree for some months. Debris from the storm sits in a twisted and contorted untidy clump at the field edge waiting to be burned by a local farmer…l will certainly return for more timber before that occurs.
Where possible all the material l work with is either salvaged or foraged from walking the woods and land around. This sense of connection to place coupled with a growing intimate knowledge of the immediate natural world contributes enormously to the inspiration, meaning and progress of my practice.
