In June of 2020 we visited the cafe used at the beginning of Top Gun Maverick. The Halfway House Cafe has been a local institution since 1931 and has numerous movie and tv shows to its credit. The cafe was featured in Heartbreak Ridge, Space Cowboys and dozens of other films and TV commercials over the years. Now seen in TOP GUN MAVERICK, which we're pretty sure will drive a lot of you who live local to visit for a great meal. Production Design on Top Gun Maverick is just outstanding. It's the details that make everything, most of which the audience never fully sees. One of which we didn't spot in the final film (but we did notice on our 2020 trip) somewhere in the background is this menu from the diner scene at The Halfway House Cafe. Notice the address on the menu is 'Idaho', and not Santa Clarita where the cafe actually exists. The allusion is that Maverick's push to Mach 10 took him just a little bit away from China Lake, 810 miles away to be exact. When you go, pick yourself up a cool coffee mug too.
