What happens in the chloroplasts during photosynthesis? During photosynthesis, carbon dioxide and water are absorbed into the chloroplasts. These substances are the starting materials for photosynthesis. Glucose and oxygen are formed as products in the chloroplasts during photosynthesis. How do chloroplasts reproduce? Like mitochondria, they are so-called semi-autonomous organelles that have their own genome (plastome, plastid DNA) and reproduce by division. How many chloroplasts are there in a cell? A typical plant cell contains up to 50 green organelles called chloroplasts. They are usually lenticular in shape with a length of 2 to 8 µm. They get their green color from chlorophyll.
