The James Webb can do much more than produce astonishing images of the universe. 🔭🌌 When light from a star shines through a planet’s atmosphere, molecules in the atmosphere absorb some of the light in unique wavelength ranges. Carbon dioxide absorbs infrared light, and previous telescopes didn’t observe in the right range or with the appropriate method to pick out its signature. JWST observes in the infrared, and picked it right up. Understanding the composition of a planet’s atmosphere can help us learn more about its origin and evolution. Webb’s success here offers evidence that it could also be able to detect and measure carbon dioxide in the thinner atmospheres of smaller rocky planets in the future.
