In this painting from the Queen series, the lady in waiting has successfully distracted their pursuers and lured them away from her beloved queen.
Her black garment speaks of grief and iminent, mortal danger, but at the same time it exudes bravery and strength. The rubies in her diadem are symbols of life and love and correspond to the red of the wounds she suffered in the struggle for her mistress: they're signs of love and sacrifice.
