This is an antique Seidlitz Powders tin can, made by The May Drug Co. of Pittsburg PA. Thats right - “Pittsburg”! This can was made before 1911, when the spelling of Pittsburgh was changed to include an H at the end!
The May Drug Co is mostly remembered for the interesting glass bottles they used to package their medicines, but their few surviving cans are amazing as well. The bright unfaded yellow reminds the viewer of Pittsburghs many bridges.
The Medicine it contained- Seidlitz powders is the generic name under which a commonly known laxative and digestion regulator was marketed and sold by numerous manufacturers under names such as "Rexall Seidlitz Powders", particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The three ingredients of Seidlitz powders (tartaric acid, potassium sodium tartrate and sodium bicarbonate) were manufactured by chemical factories from the mid-19th century onwards. The name 'Seidlitz powders' ultimately derives from the village of Sedlec in the Czech Republic.
