"If you’ve had any success in the past, you should take stock of that and realise that that will happen again, if you’re persistent, if you’re determined and you’re interested in science. I think it’s important to also relax a little bit. You have to be driven and you have to be determined and work hard, but I think emotionally you have to be relaxed and enjoy the process. I once heard Paul Nurse say when he was being interviewed on television – and I completely resonated with this – he said, sometimes things aren’t working, but you have to take joy in the experiments themselves. You should enjoy the process. Of course, you have to keep your mind on what your scientific goal is, but you should also enjoy the process and take some pride in doing experiments well and mastering new techniques because that’s the joy of the moment that gets you from place to place."
