The Hall of Glory in the Villa d’Este for my new book ‘The Fendi Set’ published by @rizzolibooks
The Hall of Glory was completed between 1566 and 1577 by Federico Zuccari (1539–1609) and eight assistants. A masterpiece of Roman Mannerist painting, with trompe l ’œil doors, windows, tapestries, sculptures and everyday objects used by Cardinal Ippolito ii d’Este (1509–72), who commissioned the villa. The central painting of the ceiling, the Allegory of Glory, has been lost, but there are allegorical depictions of the Virtues, the Four Seasons, and of Religion, Magnanimity, Fortune and Time.
